Revoke suspension of election officer Prof. Sonya Surabhi Gupta!
19 November 2022
In a shocking violation of workers rights, JMI Registrar issued suspension notice to Prof. Gupta after the JTA issued a notice to conduct elections for Jamia Teachers Association. A meeting convened by JTA to discuss this move was blocked yesterday by sealing their offices.
JTA is a democratic association of teaching staff in JMI. The recent move is a clear attempt to reduce collective bargaining powers of teaching staff and curtail campus democracy. JTA has peacefully conducted elections for many years and punishing its Election Commission’s Returning Officer is an arbitrary, punitive action.
Earlier, JMI administration has sent show cause notices to student leaders for exercising their democratic rights. In a clear attempt to criminalise anti-RSS/BJP voices, the entire Jamia Nagar area was placed under two mo th curfew after the ban on Popular Front of India and police has regularly interfered in campus activities after the brutal lathicharge on students inside the library during December 2019’s anti-CAA protests.
COLLECTIVE stands in solidarity with Prof. Sonya Surabhi Gupta and resolves to strengthen the struggle for democratic rights of teachers, students and staff in campuses.
